A tragic incident occurred in Runjin Barmo village, located in the Kajiji District of the Shagari Local Government Area in Sokoto State, where seven members of the same family lost their lives over alleged food poisoning.


Naija News reports that the tragic incident was confirmed in a statement issued by Nura Bello, the Information Officer for the state Ministry of Health, on Sunday.

On his account, the village head, Muhammadu Modi, recounted the events to the Commissioner for Health, Asabe Balarabe, indicating that the family had consumed the cassava meal during dinner.

“The victims comprised the Father, Malam Abubakar, his wife, A’ishatu Abubakar and their 5 Children.

“The incident happened last Wednesday and the cause of the death is yet to be confirmed.

“He said this was because the suspected Cassava has been used by about 4 houses in the village and not any case of illness was recorded in those houses,”
he noted.

The statement additionally indicated that the village head, representing the local community, expressed gratitude to the state Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for his concern regarding their situation.

In her address, the state Commissioner for Health, Balarabe, mentioned that their visit to the village was aimed at investigating the cause of the incident, which would be communicated to the state government for appropriate action.

The commissioner noted that the ministry would collect samples from a teenager who survived after consuming the suspected cassava meal.

On behalf of the governor, she extended condolences to the local residents affected by the incident and prayed to Allah for the forgiveness of those who lost their lives.

She took the opportunity to urge the citizens of the state to promptly report any unusual illnesses in their areas to facilitate the ministry’s intervention.
