Lagos Govt Threatens To Demolish 280 Illegal Structures

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s government has issued a warning regarding the impending demolition of 280 unauthorized structures in Lagos State.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, confirmed this move in a statement released on Tuesday, stating that it was in the government’s effort to prevent the emergence of slums, disruption of the state’s master plan, and degradation of coastal areas.

Alebiosu indicated that notifications have been sent to more than 280 owners and occupants of illegal properties within the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, situated in the Eti Osa Local Government area.

He explained that the contravention notices require the occupants to submit relevant documentation and approvals that validate their occupancy of the properties within seven days. Failure to comply will result in the issuance of a demolition order.

Furthermore, he noted that the over 280 properties, which encompass completed buildings, those under construction, and undeveloped plots, were identified as lacking any governmental authorization for their construction following a comprehensive technical evaluation of the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme.

This evaluation was carried out by the survey team from the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, which is responsible for overseeing the Lagos State Waterfront Schemes.

Alebiosu urged property owners to proactively dismantle their structures before the contravention notices expire or to come forward to regularize their documentation, if available, to avoid facing penalties.

He cautioned that all unlawful activities associated with the waterfront schemes and corridors must cease immediately, as the state government will no longer tolerate or permit individuals to encroach upon government properties, land, and setbacks.

Additionally, he revealed that the state government, via the Ministry, is actively working to rectify the situation at the Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme, where similar encroachments are occurring.
