France scaled through to the final of the 2024 Olympics men’s football after a thrilling encounter against Egypt in the semi-finals on Monday, August 5.
After falling behind to an unexpected goal by Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber, France fought back valiantly, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a late equalizer to force extra time.
Mateta then secured the lead for France with a powerful header, and Michael Olise sealed the victory with a goal in the 108th minute. The two extra-time goals sealed a 3-1 victory for coach Thierry Henry and his boys and qualified them for the final of the event.
Meanwhile, in the first semi-final, Spain secured their spot in the final by overcoming Morocco in a hard-fought contest which ended in a 2-1 victory.
After falling behind to a Soufiane Rahimi penalty, Spain equalized through Fermin Lopez and secured the win with a late goal by substitute Juanlu Sanchez.
The victory sets up a thrilling final against France at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Friday, August 9, while Morocco prepare for a bronze medal match against Egypt.
Note that this is the first time in the history of the Olympics that the two African countries, Egypt and Morocco, reached the semi-final stage of the football event. Hence, either of the two teams that win the bronze medal match on Thursday, August 8, will be winning it for the first time in their history.
